Why the Heck Am I So Tired All the Time? The Hidden Reason Women Over 40 Feel Exhausted
If you've ever asked yourself...
"Why am I this tired? I slept, I hydrated, I even ate the salad."
First of all—bless your heart for eating the salad. But let’s talk truth: if you’re a woman over 40 and dragging your bones out of bed like a zombie every morning, it’s not just “getting older.”
You’re not broken. You’re likely hormonal. And your body is trying to get your attention—kindly at first, and then like a toddler with a tambourine.
Let’s decode what’s really going on. 👇
1. Hormones: Your Body’s Text Messages
Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone aren’t just about periods and pregnancies. They’re chemical messengers—like your body's group chat. And during perimenopause and menopause, that group chat goes full chaos.
You might notice:
Sleep getting worse
Mood swings worthy of a daytime Emmy
Energy tanking by 2 p.m.
Why: Estrogen affects serotonin (your feel-good neurotransmitter), and progesterone calms your nervous system. When they fluctuate, so does everything else.
Pro Tip from Your Favorite RN: Ask your doctor to check more than your thyroid. Request additional tests like anti CCP to check for inflammation and tests to check cortisol and DHEA. And don’t let them gaslight you with, “It’s just stress.” You already knew that. (It won’t do much good to check estrogen, progesterone, or testosterone if you are not in menopause yet because those levels fluctuate on the daily!)
2. Cortisol: The Stress Hormone That Thinks It’s Your Boss
Cortisol isn’t evil. It’s helpful in emergencies. But when you’ve been in a 24/7 state of "go-go-go" (aka: midlife), your cortisol becomes clingy. (Just when you thought the days of a clingy toddler saying “mom, mom, mom” were past…)
Symptoms of cortisol imbalance:
Wired at night, tired in the morning
Anxiety spikes
Cravings for coffee, chips, or crime documentaries
How to Help:
Hydrate before coffee (sorry, I know)
Get outside for 10 minutes of light in the morning
Try adaptogens—my fav: Arbonne’s Inner Calm
Also, say no to things. Unapologetically. Cortisol loves a woman with boundaries.
3. Gut Health: It’s Not Just About Bloating
Did you know 90% of serotonin is produced in your gut? Yep. Your mood is literally connected to your poop. (Ewww)
A sluggish gut = a sluggish brain = a sluggish you.
What Messes It Up:
Processed foods
Antibiotics (even years ago)
Stress and lack of fiber
What Helps:
Daily fiber + probiotics (Arbonne’s Fiber and Gut Health are my go-to)
Magnesium
An anti-inflammatory plate: think leafy greens, lean protein, healthy fats
Add in 64 oz of water and your gut will start sending you love letters.
4. Sleep: The Unicorn of Midlife
You want to sleep. You try to sleep. And yet…
You wake at 2 a.m. for no reason
You sweat like you’re in a desert
You turn and turn like a rotisserie chicken
This isn’t just insomnia. It’s hormone-driven sleep disruption.
Solutions That Work:
Start a wind-down routine by 9 p.m.
Magnesium glycinate or a sleep-supporting supplement
Stop doom scrolling. (Yes, I’m talking to myself, too!)
5. Blood Sugar Drama: Not Just for Diabetics
Energy roller coasters often come down to what—and when—you eat.
Skipping meals? Overdoing carbs without protein? Welcome to blood sugar spikes and crashes.
Quick Fixes:
Eat within an hour of waking
Pair every carb with a protein or fat (apple + almond butter = chef’s kiss)
Don’t fear snacks. Smart snacks save lives.
Final Word: You’re Not Lazy, You’re in Transition
Midlife isn’t a decline. It’s a recalibration. Your body’s whispering (okay, shouting) that it needs new tools for a new season.
What worked at 25 might not work at 45—and that’s not failure. That’s evolution.
You're not alone, and you don’t have to figure it all out solo.
