Faith, Fog, and Hormones: A Christian Woman's Guide to Finding Peace in the Messy Middle
🙏 When your hormones feel out of control, lean into the One who isn’t.
If you’ve ever whispered a prayer like:
"Lord, I don’t recognize myself anymore." You're not alone.
Perimenopause is more than hot flashes and sleepless nights. It's a holy invitation to rediscover who you are—and whose you are—when everything feels foggy.
As a nurse, I understand the hormonal science. As a Christian woman in midlife, I understand the soul ache too. Let’s talk about both.
1. Hormonal Shifts Are Real—Not a Lack of Faith
You’re not moody because you don’t pray enough. You’re exhausted because your body is recalibrating.
Estrogen and progesterone play a massive role in brain function, mood, and energy. When they dip, it’s not weakness—it’s biology.
Even Elijah needed a nap and a snack (1 Kings 19). Your faith is not broken because you feel broken. It might just need rest, support, and kindness.
2. Mental Fog Is a Spiritual Invitation
Brain fog, forgetfulness, zoning out mid-sentence—these are common signs of perimenopause. But they can also serve as holy pauses.
Maybe God is slowing us down not to punish us, but to reposition us. To quiet the world enough so we finally hear Him.
Ask: "Lord, what are You inviting me into during this slow-down?"
3. Your Identity Isn’t Tied to a Stage of Life
Midlife often comes with deep grief:
Children growing or leaving
Aging or dying parents
Changing roles at work or in marriage
It’s easy to wonder: Who am I now?
But your identity was never in your titles. It was in Christ. This season can be sacred ground for rediscovering your worth—apart from productivity or perfection. Read that one again! Your worth isn’t based in how productive you can be each day, or whether you make mistakes because your brain fog made you forget something…again.
4. You Don’t Have to Do This Alone
We weren’t meant to white-knuckle our way through midlife. Yet so many women suffer in silence.
Whether it’s hormone support, mental health care, or spiritual guidance—asking for help is not weakness. It’s wisdom. And most of us certainly didn’t get preparation for this stage of life. It wasn’t included in the 5th grade “know your body” video that the school nurse played for us.
Find community. Talk to your doctor. Pray with a trusted friend. And remember: even Jesus surrounded Himself with support. He took backup when he went to pray at the garden.
5. Peace Comes When We Partner with Both Wisdom and the Word
Scripture and science can co-exist beautifully.
Track your symptoms and your prayers.
Balance your blood sugar and your Bible reading.
Take supplements and Scripture.
Your healing doesn’t have to be either/or. It can be both/and.
Final Thought:
Faith doesn’t you can’t have days where you don’t feel great. We don’t have to pretend we feel great and spout “those things that be not as though they were” to prove our faith to others. Sometimes faith means trusting God while Googling hormone support.
If this season feels messy, uncertain, and sacred all at once—you’re not crazy. You’re in the messy middle.
And God is right there with you.
🙏 With grace and gratitude,
Joyce
